Free the prisoners of conscience

America is shaken by the behavior of its soldiers in Iraq. When an army occupies a civilian population, every citizen becomes suspect, every detainee a criminal. The result is a loss of human dignity, leading to uncertainty about the cause – by the soldiers, by the general public, and by the whole world. This is what curently happens to the US in Iraq; this is what happened to France in Algeria, and this is what happens to us in the Occupied Territories.

Haggai Matar, Matan Kaminer, Shimri Zameret, Adam Maor, and Noam Bahat are Prisoners of Conscience. For almost two years now, they have been in prison, after being court-martialed and convicted several times for the same offence: refusing to enlist in an army, whose main task is the occupation and oppression of the Palestinia people.

After sentencing them, again, for a full year in prison, the army decided to transfer them to a civilian prison, claiming that their presence in military prison amounts to a security risk (!). They have been convicted and imprisoned despite their explicit request to serve their country in the form of civil-service.

The long imprisonment and repetitive convictions are meant to break their spirit. Despite this, their behavior in prison is unblemished, and they are appreciated by wardens and inmates alike. Therefore, like any other prisoner, they deserve a reduction in term for good behavior. No one will benefit from prolonging the present situation – not even the army.

Help us! The committee in charge of reducing their sentence is about to convene shortly. We need your immediate assistance in creating public pressure that will bring about our sons‘ release. Lacking any financial resources, our voice is drowned by that of the government and the army.

Please help us with any amount you can afford, even 10 or 20 dollars, so that our voice can be heard – in order to free our sons. This is the least we can – and must – do, for those who protest and pay the price.

Gratefully,
The parents:

Doron and Anat Matar
Noam Kaminer and Smadar Nehab
Marit Moran-Zameret
Alex Maor and Miri Maor
Amira and Udi Bahat
